in the south of the Netherlands Where the fancy dress parties, music and later the parades reflect the creativity of the people. A feast of the opposite world.................

The main explanation for the origin of the party is that people were happy that the days, after the often harsh winters, became longer again. A dark period was closed and a period of prosperity broke. After all, everything will grow and flower again in the spring, and food will be abundant again.

CARNIVAL BEFORE OETELDONK

Carnaval is often referred to by the word Vastenavond or Vastelavond, which has to do with fertility. Actually, carnival was traditionally a celebration in which people mainly celebrated the lengthening of the days and the fertility of crop, people and animals. Only later is carnaval directly influenced by the Roman Catholic Church with the church calendar and the fast period. During the party, people could have a good time for the sober forty days of fasting. There are, among other things in the Miracle Book of St. John, evidence found that in 1444 was talked about 'fasting evening'. In short: the party has been celebrated in 's-Hertogenbosch for more than 550 years.

THE BIRTH OF OETELDONK




Already in Medieval 's-Hertogenbosch the carnaval tradition lives among the Bosschenaren. Because of the large number of disturbances and to manage everything in the right direction, in 1882 the Oeteldonksche Club of 1882 was founded. Since that year, the club organizes the carnaval in Den Bosch, which during the party has been transformed into Oeteldonk. Near the Oeteldonksche Club of 1882 almost all carnaval associations from the city are connected. The club also manages the Oeteldonks Gemintemuzejum. The Oeteldonkse Club annually organizes a large procession of floats. Since the Second World War, many carnival associations have dedicated themselves to making the most artistic floats.
